We can always arrange for guided walks taking in the rarely visited valleys and combs between here and the sea. One of the countries leading paragliding schools is very close by. Glyndebourne Opera house is no more than two milesaway. Drusilla’s Zoo is just along the A27. Charleston Farmhouse is a twenty minute walk away. Then of course there are the Lanes, Pavilion and Pier all just down the road in Brighton and over fifteen antique shops in Lewes or you could just go to the beach or find a quiet spot among the wild flowers to read or take a picnic. If you want a picnic, we can make one up for you.

Annually, mid May to end August. Like strawberries and cream, village fetes, Wimbledon, Glastonbury and cricket, the Glyndebourne festival season is an essential part of the classic English summer. If you love opera, it’s a must. The whole event – dressing up, the beautiful setting, champagne and picnics in the garden, plus great music and top international performers – is a real experience. In autumn, Glyndebourne Touring Opera is good too.

It attracts some of the best guitar players around, from axe legends to rising stars, playing classical, amenco, folk, jazz, rock and contemporary. Events include concerts, workshops, jams, parties and exhibitions.

THE SUNDAY TIMES – ‘THE SOUTH DOWNS WAY’

THE INDEPENDENT – ‘SOME BLOOMSBERRIES WITH YOUR BANOFFI PIE?’

Bloomsberries can visit Charleston, the murals in Berwick Church and the plain but evocative Monks Cottage in Rodmell where Virginia Woolf lived. Firle Beacon was one of her regular walks. THIRSTY WALKERS descending Firle Beacon should head for the Ram Inn (01273 85822), a village local with a walled garden. There are benches against the wall where older villagers sit in the sun with a quiet pint. The ploughman’s comes with home-cooked ham or good cheeses and the puds are true Brit. They sell the hoppy beers from Harveys, brewed in Lewes, and Breaky Bottom which is made a little further along the Downs that you see at the end of the village. This wine’s notes of flint and honey are very much in tune with the landscape.

The Ram Inn has been at the heart of a vibrant farming community for over five hundred years. A wonderful village local, set in Firle, at the foot of the Downs and in the South Downs National Park. The rambling old building has three main bar areas, each with its own open fire lit every day between October and April. At the bar you will find artists, walkers, writers, farmers, farriers and vicars, and the garden is usually full of families and children of all ages. Now known for really good local food as well as locally produced cask ales, we also have four beautiful bedrooms and offer bed & breakfast all year round.

So what makes The Ram what it is? You can sit outside, in the heart of the village, and have a drink and there are the hills rolling away above the rooftops. As well as being an inn, the Ram was also host to the old travelling courts. The court room which is not as grand as it sounds is at the back of the pub and leads through to the garden and orchard. But it is really the Downs and the generations that have lived upon them and shaped them that have made The Ram what it is and it is that sense of the local that we try to celebrate in as many ways as possible.

We’ve got some great offers. Have a look at the news page for the latest deals.

Annually, end July/early August. Lewes has six resident guitar makers – that’s a lot for a small county town, and perhaps that’s why this festival is so good. It attracts some of the best guitar players around, from axe legends to rising stars, playing classical, amenco, folk, jazz, rock and contemporary. Events include concerts, workshops, jams, parties and exhibitions.

and have been carefully furnished with a mixture of contemporary furniture and local
antiques. You’ll find Egyptian cotton on the beds, duck down duvets and each room
has a flat screen TV and DVD player. Your bathroom could be natural stone and solid
oak or panelled in painted tongue and groove but it will have contemporary fittings and
soft Egyptian cotton towels. Breakfast is also from as close as possible, eggs from the
village, bacon from up the road and some truly delicious locally made sausages.
